I am Performing in Voices in Action Concert: Artists Against Oppression

Voices in Action Concert: Artists Against Oppression
Hey folks,
Today at 8:50 PM EST / 5:50 PM PST, I will be performing my poem I wrote two months after the execution of Sam Dubose on July 19, 2015 by University of Cincinnati police, Ray Tenning. Tenning was fired from the department and indicted for murder and voluntary manslaughter; however, after two hung juries, his charges were dismissed with prejudice. "#NotAnotherHashtag" was penned connecting my own anguish to my own encounters with the police, which I detail in the poem. I detail the case that shifted my mind in a blog I wrote, "I am Rayshard Brooks". I also detail this case through a comedic form, "Ketchup" for In Laughing Color for Queerky Folks.
I hope you can tune in.

Voices in Action Concert is a telethon-style event that will livestream on Sunday, July 5th from 9am to 9pm PST (6am - 6pm EDT) to raise money for the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund. The event came about through “how can we show up?” conversations between artists, arts producers, and promoters distressed by the death of George Floyd and the unrelenting tide of police violence towards Black people.
Incredible artists and rising stars have signed on to join the concert as well, such as:
  • Marc de la Cruz — Broadway actor seen recently in the title role in ‘Hamilton’

  • Dar Williams — singer-songwriter described in the New Yorker as "one of America's very best singer-songwriters."

  • AshEL SeaSunz — musician, activist, of Earth Amplified (as seen with will.i.am)

  • Albert Lee
 — Grammy award-winning guitarist and singer
  • DJ Kuttin Kandi
 — Hip-hop activist and top battle DJ (as seen with Jay Z and LL Cool J)
  • Ife Franklin
 — award winning artist and author
  • Diane Phelan — Original Broadway cast of ‘The King and I’

These and many more will be performing throughout the 12-hour event. We will hear poetry, singers, musicians, and performers of all nature putting their voices into action in order to reach a goal of $100,000 in donations.
The telethon style event will provide free high quality entertainment and just like an old fashioned telethon attendees will learn more about the organizations and have the opportunity to donate to the organizations directly.
The concert is free — simply register on the Eventbrite page https://bit.ly/viaconcert to livestream it on July 5th.
Voices in Action is an effort of passionate multiracial artists and community members to increase immediate and ongoing donations for organizations on the forefront of racial justice and protecting Black lives organized completely by volunteers.
